Los Angeles (AFP / Reuters) - A three-month-old kitten recovering in California after traveling across the Pacific to the survivors of the shipping containers from China, without food or water, officials said.
Orange and white furry animal, named Ni Hao, or in Mandarin means hello, after it was discovered when the container was opened last week, after two weeks of traveling as far as 10,450 kilometers from Shanghai.
At first he was too weak to stand, but the kitten finally start the first step - and now officials are looking for local cat lovers who want to adopt.
"Ni Hao medical team was greeted with the sound of meowing first this morning and tried to stand up," said Marcia Mayeda, head of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control.
In theory it should be kept in quarantine for 60 days, but it "may be allowed to complete the quarantine period under the care and supervision of foster families if his health continues to improve," says Mayeda.
